Ok, So picture this, your a kid in the early 2000's ready to boot up your very first gaming console, perhaps an original Xbox or PS2. you have snacks and your all bundled up in a bouquet of blankets and pillows. Gentle snow is falling outside, no school and no obligations of any kind cross your little brain as you turn on your console, ready to play your favourite games. Then, BAM all sights and sound fill your developing skull as the beeps and boops fill your ears and the stunning visuals of the title screen bring wonder to your eyes. You navigate the menus as though your operating a space ship, ready to launch into the unknown cosmos. Not even into a game yet and your already having a blast! you knew that this was special, you knew this was gaming at it's finest.

IMMERSION BREAK

Now, fast forward to today where your an adult and everything sucks now! your job sucks, your apartment sucks, your relationships sucks, everything sucks! after a long day of a gruelling work shift, you sit down on your facebook marketplace couch to enjoy some light gaming, before you have to go to bed to repeat the vicious cycle. Turning on your brand new, next gen ultra-cool and ultra-expensive gamer box 5000, to which you took out a loan just to get. Eagerly, you turn on the console ready to experience the beeps, the boops, and the stunning titles and menus of your childhood, you are ready for launch into the cosmos once again.

AND THEN YOU GET MET WITH THIS!!!

AND THIS!!!

FUCK THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR!!!

Haiiii :3, I'm fudge and today I wanted to talk about the enshittifiaction of modern UI/UX design, not only in gaming but also in the tech industry as a whole and why it may be a problem. So grab your crusty, cheeto filled controller and let's dive in.

Unpopular opinion but, we need more "gamer tm" tech, just think about old alienware products, shit legit looked like an alien spaceship. tacky or not, at least it was creative, creativity in product design is honestly a "lost art tm" at least in my eyes anyway.

Unfortunately, because of unchecked capitalism most companies go down this route, in a desperate attempt to please everyone they end up pleasing no one, a tale as old as time I'm afraid. So we know tech has kind of evolutionizied itself into a rough spot where every company is trying to copy each other. Just want to make it perfectly clear, I don't mind and even encourage UI to be more user friendly especially to those with accessibility issues. However, I'm getting tired of all this bland, boring interfaces, it's so samey across the entire industry. It gets really frustrating when you realise how cool and creative, UI was back only 10 or 20 years ago, just look at windows 7 vs windows 11.

everything is flatter and more symbolic, it may look a bit nicer but it sacrifices character.

I don't just want to look at the negative aspects of tech, since that's not what I'm about. so here's a really good example of a clean yet creative interface.

this is a app called subvert.fm, a collectively owned music streaming platform I came across recently on a bluesky post, they're only accepting invites right now however, frick, they got my support, not only for the artist owned nature of the platform but also the absolute kickass UI/UX of the whole app. You can very clearly tell they put a lot of work into the feel and look, I like it because it gives the impression that it was made by humans rather than an algorithm!

Anyways, I've been yapping for too long, rant over. make sure to check out the links below and as always take care and have a wonderful day, night or afternoon! <3
